Color Trends: Shades of Green

Green is more than an earth-loving’s bride way of life, it’s also appearing as a prevalent color trend for my ‘09 brides.  Green is a bold and dynamic color choice that can make a huge statement for your event.  I thought I’d pull together some great ideas about using green in your design from a few different perspectives, beginning with one from a fave magazine– the ever amazing Real Simple.  An article in their April entitled “Decorating with Color: Green” by Nicole Sforza  talks about using green dynamically & successfully without making your affair too green. While their application is for a room, it’s similar to the way you can think about your wedding: the same rules of interior design apply to event design– and bold colors (like green, or another popular hue this season, purple– can seem scary and intimidating). However, I brought you some great tips from Real Simple to help you  apply the same rules in your floral & event design for your day:

1. Mix Shades: Celerie Kemble, interior decorator, reminds us of this important rule: “If everything is one hue, it’s blah.”  Nature helps by offering a wide array of green flowers. There’s the lime green of spider mums, the yell0wy-lime of button mums, and the crisp greens of bells of ireland. Come in and add some depth with a paler lime of a green anthurium, the soft green of a jade rose, and play with texture by throwing in a few succulents or even an artichoke.

Don’t be afraid to mix colors: great combinations are featured in Real Simple — these are color combos you can try in your event if you’re afraid you might go too green:

Let’s look at the combo of white + green– a great concept for a late summer wedding where you want to embrace all things green while still maintaining a crisp feel.  I love to decorate with grass (There’s a big pot of it growing at the studio “Just Because”) that can make for a fun way to display escort cards or to decorate the top of your cake table if you’re really ambitious. You can get wheat grass flats, like the one shown below, and plant in a nice crisp white container– voila, instant centerpiece!

Other fun ways to bring in the green:  use beargrass or lily grass as a napkin ring on your nice, crisp white linens; give a tree as a favor and let each guest’s place be marked with that very same tree (learn more by visiting a nursery that specializes in giving trees as a favor)

Not sure about your green dreams? Well, you could always incorporate a third color (we like black, white, and green, green, pink, and brown, or brown, aqua, and green as starters) — or a pattern (like a damask) or go totally bold with apple green, vivid red, and beautiful orange (as one of our lovely brides have done). Remember, it’s just color– don’t be afraid of it!
